A scientific career requires a lot of stamina and sometimes also good contacts to be in the right place at the right time. For ten years now, the via:mento programme has been supporting women at the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel (CAU) in their further academic career after their doctorate. From December onwards, the new English-language mentoring programme »via:mento international« will also promote international networks. "Internationalization also has an inclusive character for us, as it allows us to include non-German-speaking postdocs, post-doctoral students and junior professors at CAU. Our focus in the new program is on the promotion of intercultural skills that will help participants in an academic career abroad", says Dr. Marta Chiarinotti, coordinator of via:mento_international, explaining the expansion of the program.

Applications possible until 30 September

"Since its launch ten years ago, we have been able to accompany 90 women scientists on their way. Around 40 percent of them have held a professorship or have reached a permanent scientific position," reports Dr. Ruth Kamm, coordinator of via:mento. Scientific careers are increasingly international in nature. Therefore, the programme is now being given an international orientation. This year, there are 15 places per programme line. The application period began on July 6 and ends on September 30, 2020. Applications are also open to female postdocs from some of CAU's partner institutes, such as the Institute for Science Education and Mathematics (IPN) or the Institute for World Economics (IfW). For a period of 21 months, the mentors will then personally accompany the doctoral candidates. In addition, they can attend workshops on topics such as career planning or appointment procedures and prepare for academic careers with various activities. A ceremony to mark the tenth anniversary of the programme is planned for 3 December. It will also mark the official starting point for both mentoring rounds.

Programme boosts women's careers

Professor Maike Vollstedt knows that via:mento can boost your own career. She took part in the programme from 2012 to 2014 and today teaches the didactics of mathematics at the University of Bremen: "During my time as a via:mento fellow, I received my first call. During the appointment negotiations I benefited on the one hand from the accompanying coaching and seminar programme in Kiel and on the other hand from the discussions with my mentor. The assessments of an 'old hand' were worth their weight in gold for me and certainly contributed to the happy course of the negotiations and the acceptance of the call. A mentoring relationship has meanwhile turned into a friendship". Who accompanies the women as a mentor is up to them. This makes them flexible in their orientation, because it should be someone from a national or international university institution.

There will be a virtual information event for interested female CAU applicants on 16 July.

One week before the official start, via:mento_international has been presented at the Lower Saxony - Scotland Joint Forum. In the workshop session "Early Stage Researchers & Networking in times of COVID-19" different aspects of mentoring have been discussed: the relevance of support by a mentor, the importance to enlarge one´s network and the possibilities to do so during the pandemic. How a mentoring programme can lead to a cultural change and adress gender imbalances has also been topic of the discussion.
